PHNOM PENH, Apr 22 (Khmer Times) – The Ministry of Mine and Energy announced the start of bidding on plots of land for sand dredging.

Both national and international companies will be allowed to bid on spots to dredge after the ministry banned sand dredging along the Mekong last month.

According to the announcement issued yesterday, the ministry is opening four plots of land to bidders in Kampong Cham and Kandal provinces.

The ministry has warned sand dredgers along the rivers that they face imprisonment and fines if they dredge sand illegally without licenses from the ministry. The ministry detained 16 sand dredging operation owners earlier this month.
