The National Assembly today approved an amendment on Political Party law which could see hundreds of former opposition members banned from political activity for five years lifted.
115 CPP lawmakers, including National Assembly president Heng Samrin adopted an insertion of a paragraph into article 45 of the law so that anyone banned by the Supreme Court from doing politics, standing for election or joining any political parties will have their rights restored.
CPP senior lawmaker Cheam Yeap and one of 87 lawmakers who proposed the amendment said that the amendment was to strengthen political parties’ roles and responsibilities, uphold multi-party democracy and strengthen national security.
“The amendment on the Law on Political Parties now is to promote national unity and strengthen multi-party democracy in Cambodia,” Mr Yeap said.
“This amendment on Political Party Law is the spirit of national unity and mercy by the Cambodian People’s Party that always upholds multi-party democracy,” he said.
