PHNOM PENH, April 20 (Xinhua) — A Cambodian court sentenced a 55-year-old British man to eight years in prison on Monday for having sex with underage girls.

“Michael Glyn Jones was found guilty of purchasing of a child prostitution and committing indecent act against four underage girls,” Judge Ly Sokleng of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court said.

Jones was arrested in June by the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Unit after he took an 11-year-old girl into a rental house for sex on four occasions.

Samleang Seila, director of NGO Action Pour Les Enfants (APLE), was satisfied with the court’s verdict.

“This man has committed an extremely serious crime on young girls and has to be responsible for his act,” he said.

Cambodia has launched an anti-pedophilia operation since 2003 in a bid to end its reputation as a haven for child sex offenders. Dozens of foreigners have been imprisoned for child sex crimes.
