PHNOM PENH, Apr. 18 (Khmer Times) – After six months on the run from Cambodian authorities, Cambodian mogul Thong Sarath is facing a possible life sentence behind bars for allegedly masterminding the brutal killing of Shimmex Group chairman and owner of Hong Kong Diamond Shop, Ung Meng Cheu last November.
Mr. Sarath, the owner of the Borey 999 development project, was arrested and detained in Prey Sar prison on Friday night after being questioned for three hours by an investigating judge of the municipal court.
According to articles 28 and 200 of the Criminal Code of the Kingdom, the tycoon may serve life imprisonment if he is found guilty of premeditated murder.
Last November, Mr. Meng Cheu suffered a gruesome death when he was shot six times during a brutal attack in front of a fruit shop on Sihanouk Blvd in Tuol Svay Prey 2 commune, in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Morn district, after alighting from his Lexus 570 to buy some fruit.
Police later arrested four of Thong Sarath’s bodyguards who subsequently confessed that they were taking orders from their employer. Mr. Sarath’s parents were then arrested and charged with keeping illegal weapons in separate houses in Beoung Tumpun and Chak Angre Leu communes in the Meanchey district.
The fugitive tycoon was arrested on Thursday in a village in Svay Rieng province near the Vietnam border. He is believed to have taken refuge in Vietnam for several months following the assassination.
