Svay Rieng Provincial Court yesterday charged a police officer for allegedly crashing his car into a house while drunk, causing serious damage in Svay Rieng city.
Major Rith Sothea, a provincial traffic police officer, identified the accused as Captain So Vina, 28, from the provincial general crimes department.
He said that Cap Vina, who is being treated in Vietnam, was charged in absentia with driving carelessly and damaging other people’s property.
“In this case, the prosecutor did not arrest or detain him in prison because his family paid $1,000 to Hong Pov, 40, a farmer, to repair the house,” Maj Sothea said. “But the prosecutor charged him in absentia and he faces six months in jail if convicted.”
Captain Heng Sopheap, a city police officer, said that at about 11.30pm on Thursday, Cap Vina was travelling in his car along National Road 13 in Sangkhour commune.
He said that Cap Vina was drunk and sleepy, and lost control of his car and crashed into Mr Pov’s house in Preah Tonle village.
“He drove while asleep and hit the house, causing serious damage,” Cap Sopheap said. “Luckily, Mr Pov and others in the house were sleeping upstairs and were not injured.”
He said that Cap Vina was seriously injured on the head, both legs, hands and chest.
Cap Sopheap said that after the accident, Cap Vina was rescued from the wrecked car and sent to the provincial referral hospital.
He noted that because the injuries were serious, his family sent him for treatment in Vietnam on Friday.
