ALGIERS (Xinhua) – Coastguards in Algeria’s western province of Oran have deterred a total of 61 people from sailing illegally to European shores in three separate operations, APS news agency reported.
In the first operation, coastguards intercepted a pneumatic boat off the coast of Oran with 21 people on board, including six women and four minors.
In the second operation, another boat with 21 immigrants, including two women and five minors, was intercepted while sailing to international waters.
In the third operation, 19 people, including one woman and three minors, were taken into custody about 12.8 km north of the port of Oran.
All the detainees will be charged in the court for attempting to leave the country illegally, APS said.
According to the Algerian government, about 40,000 potential illegal immigrants are deterred from reaching Europe annually.
