Nearly 40 students at Sampov Loun High School in Battambang province’s Sampov Loun district fainted without reason over the past two days and officials are continuing to investigate.
Ngeav Bun Yang, governor of Sampov Loun district, said it remains unclear why the students fainted, but noted that they were not suffering from food poisoning.
“Those students started to faint on Monday and also today, and the number that fainted has reached 40,” he said. “They fainted while studying in class.”
Mr Bun Yang said parents of the students are deeply concerned about the fainting and asked district authorities to conduct an inspection of the school, including food served at it.
“They were sent to hospital immediately and some have already retuned home,” he said. “There were no serious injuries or deaths.”
Meas Mao Sak, chief of operations at the District Hall, said that most of the students who fainted were girls studying hard for an exam.
“Some students who fainted said they were tired due to studying very hard,” he said. “They also said they may not have eaten enough food while studying.”
