Police in Kandal province have arrested two people for buying a handgun through a Prey Sar prison convict and attempting to commit robberies.
Major General Eav Chamroeun, chief of the provincial police, identified the suspects as Keo Kroch, Soy Ya and Say Mao, and noted that Mr Mao is currently at large.
“On Friday, police received information that there would be an attempted robbery,” he said. “Police officers took pre-emptive action and arrested two suspects, while another escaped.”
Maj Gen Chamroeun said a raid was conducted at the home of the suspects where one handgun and two rifles, ammunition, drugs and a military uniform were confiscated.
He noted that the handgun was bought from inside Prey Sar prison from a convict for $200.
Maj Gen Chamroeun said that the three men used the handgun to rob a motorcycle rider in Ang Snuol district last month.
“Mr Kroch confessed that he lent Mr Mao and Mr Ya his CF-98 9mm pistol to rob a motorbike rider in October,” Maj Gen Chamroeun said. “Mr Kroch bought the gun from a man who goes by Leak, a convict at Prey Sar prison, via phone.”
“He was then told to collect the pistol from a rice field in Por Senchey district’s Tomnup Kob Srove commune,” he added. “Mr Kroch is involved in drug dealing as well.”
Major Phach Phalla, chief of the Ang Snoul district general crimes department, said that Mr Mao is suspected of still being in the district.
“The two suspects are being questioned by district police. Their questioning will lead to the arrest of their other associate. Right now, we have surrounded a forest to look for Mr Mao who is hiding in there,” Maj Phall said. “We believe the suspects were planning to commit other crimes. The arrest of Mr Mao would bring bigger fish.”
