US ambassador makes farewell courtesy call

Mom Kunthear / Khmer Times No Comments Share:

Outgoing US Ambassador to Cambodia William Heidt yesterday paid a farewell courtesy call to Labour Minister Ith Samheng and discussed continued cooperation between the two countries.

Labour department deputy director Nguy Rith told reporters after the meeting that Mr Heidt said Mr Samheng talked about the close cooperation they enjoyed over the years and how they worked together to solve problems.

According to the US embassy, the ambassador thanked the minister for his close collaboration, and congratulated him on the progress Cambodia has made in expanding the country’s manufacturing sector and improving working conditions in factories.

Mr Heidt noted the key importance of accelerating reforms to improve worker rights and labour management relations in order to retain the confidence of international buyers and access to overseas markets.

He also urged the minister to consult broadly with manufacturers, unions, and other stakeholders, including the International Labour Organisation and relevant NGOs, in this process.

Mr Samheng said yesterday that he was happy with the visit and noted that he will miss Mr Heidt, who finishes his diplomatic mission in Cambodia at the end of the month.

“The time for your mission seems to have passed very fast,” he said. “During your mandate, we have had a good relationship with each other on issues affecting workers.”
