A retired military officer was arrested Tuesday in Kampong Chhnang province and could face 15 years in prison if found guilty of raping his ten-year-old daughter multiple times.
Major Keo Piseth, deputy commander of the provincial military police, identified the suspect as El Vatha, a 58-year-old retiree living in Kraing Leav commune.
Maj Piseth said Mr Vatha raped his daughter multiple times, on October 23, October 25, and October 29 while the rest of the family was away.
He noted that Mr Vatha has five children and that the victim was his youngest daughter.
“He held down his own daughter and raped her at his home while the rest of his family was away,” Maj Piseth said. “After he assaulted her, Mr Vatha told her not to tell anyone, threatening to beat her if her mother found out.”
He added that on Tuesday, the victim finally spoke up and told her mother what Mr Vatha had done. The mother inspected the victim’s injuries and reported her husband to police.
Mr Vatha was arrested the same day in accordance with a complaint filed by his wife.
The suspect now stands accused of rape with aggravating circumstances and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
He is being detained at the provincial military police headquarters pending a court appearance today.
