The most dominant world champion in mixed martial arts history has arrived at Singapore-based ONE Championship.

Demetrious Johnson signed a landmark deal that will see the American megastar join Eddie Alvarez on the Asian MMA promotions roster.

Widely regarded as the best pound-for-pound combat sports athlete of this era, the 32-year-old heads to Asia to showcase his incredible skill set in front of a new legion of appreciative fans.

Johnson began his martial arts journey as a successful wrestler in high school, eventually finishing as one of the top wrestlers in the state of Washington during his junior and senior years. In 2007, two years after his graduation, he made the switch to mixed martial arts.

He then put together a 10-bout win streak and quickly found himself competing in North America’s biggest promotions.

In 2012, Johnson became the inaugural UFC Flyweight World Champion, and his grip on the title has been unrivalled anywhere else in the sport.

He posted an incredible record of 11 consecutive defences over a six-year stretch, finishing seven of his elite-level challengers inside the distance.

Dominating the opposition put in front of him, the Washington luminary became renowned for arguably the most complete repertoire of skills ever seen in the cage.

Chatri Sityodtong, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO welcomed his new signing in glowing terms on an Instagram post. “Please join me in welcoming the #1 pound-for-pound king, Demetrious Johnson, to ONE Championship. He is the most dominant mixed martial arts world champion in history, and holds the record for the most number of world title defenses in UFC. His extraordinary achievements speak for themselves, but I am most impressed by his character, his values, and his life story,” reads the post.

Johnson currently holds a 27-3-1 professional record, with five wins coming via knockout and 11 via submission. He has never been finished in his 11-year career.

Now, after clearing out the flyweight division in North America, he has opted to test himself against fresh challenges in the Asian MMA scene.

ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio will be watching carefully, and the likes of Adriano Moraes, Kairat Akhmetov, Reece McLaren, Danny Kingad, and Gianni Subba are all potential rivals for the American.

Johnson is the latest in a slew of high-profile signings to ONE Championship, including multiple-time World Champion Alvarez and top kickboxing star Nieky Holzken. – Singapore (ONE Championship)
