Luminaries from Cambodia’s Mixed Martial Arts scene descended on the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia headquarters yesterday for the inaugural edition of the Cambodian MMA congress.
Among the attendees at yesterday’s event were Bokator Grandmaster Hok Chheang Kim, Cambodian Top Team (CTT) coach and founder Hun Chan Reach, Derek Bidaut, founder & director at Prodal Fight & Fitness Studio, and a slew of fighters including much-loved female fight sensation Tharoth Sam, and CTT’s ONE Championship trio of fighters Meas Meul, Rin Saroth and Sor Sey.
Coach Chan Reach, who is headed with leading the development of the Cambodian MMA Federation, said he looked forward to work alongside Vath Chamroeun, general secretary of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, President of the Kun Khmer Federation Major General Tem Mern, and Sisara Meam, President of the International Kun Khmer Federation.
With MMA among the leading participation sports in recent years, the kingdom’s sporting authorities are hoping Cambodia can begin to match its potential in international competition. An official MMA Federation will be integral in making it a reality.
In related MMA news, Tharoth Sam will be back in the cage on November 3rd at Full Metal Dojo 16: Big Trouble in Little Bangkok. The event, held in FMD’s hometown of Bangkok, Thailand, is a Halloween-themed affair set after the 1986 Kurt Russell cult classic, ‘Big Trouble in Little China’.
Tharoth who goes by the name “Little Frog” will face the Philippines’ Kristelle Choi, in a four-woman tournament format which will be sure to entice fans.
