Asian Mixed Martial Arts promotion ONE Championship (ONE), the largest global sports media property in Asia, announced yesterday it had signed former MMA lightweight world champion Eddie Alvarez to a multiple bout contract.

Alvarez, 34 and who has won titles in both the UFC and Bellator, joins a stacked roster at ONE, featuring world champions from mixed martial arts, Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing, and the like. He holds a 29-6-1 professional record, with 18 of his career victories coming via TKO.

Alvarez made his professional MMA debut in December 2003, and he has since become one of the sport’s most entertaining and successful competitors.

After claiming three welterweight titles, he dropped to lightweight and, in 2008, he became a fan favourite in the Japan-based DREAM promotion.

Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, stated: “I am thrilled to announce that multiple-time world champion Eddie ‘The Underground King’ Alvarez will be joining ONE Championship on a multiple-bout contract. Eddie is one of the world’s best martial artists in the world, and is no doubt a tremendous addition to the ONE roster. The ONE Championship roster is incredibly deep with talents such as Shinya Aoki, Eduard Folayang, and Amir Khan, among others. I am excited to have Eddie in that mix and to see some amazing matchups and performances. This is no doubt one of the biggest athlete signings in the history of ONE Championship.”

Known as “The Underground King”, former multiple-time world champion Eddie Alvarez of the United States is a mixed martial arts legend who has competed for the world’s top mixed martial arts promotions. The experience he has gathered over a stellar 15 year professional career so far is beyond impressive, with wins over some of the biggest names in the sport.

His most notable victories have come against the likes of Roger Huerta, Shinya Aoki, Gilbert Melendez, Anthony Pettis, Rafael Dos Anjos, and most recently Justin Gaethje. Recognised for his well-rounded skills and unwavering will to win, Alvarez now joins the ONE Championship lightweight division looking to continue his legendary career in the world’s largest martial arts organisation.

ONE Championship shared Alvarez’s his reaction in an online video.

“The moment of truth has arrived. I know you’ve heard the rumours, and they are true. We got our official contract from ONE Championship, and we’re all signed up,” the American said, before showing a trophy case that holds his title belts with one slot noticeably vacant.

“I am super excited. ‘The Underground King’ is coming to ONE Championship, and in preparation, I left that shelf there empty. You guys know what that’s for. I’m coming, get ready.”
