The Preah Sihanouk Provincial Police will punish three traffic cops for taking a bribe from a Chinese motorist.

Provincial police chief Major General Chuon Narin said that the three traffic officers were detained for questioning, that they will be punished in accordance with police regulations, and that their actions have negatively affected the reputation of the entire police force.

The affair arose after a Facebook video showed a traffic officer asking a Chinese motorist, who was driving without wearing a seat belt, to pay him $100 to not report the offence.  The driver then drove the price down to $50.

That police recognized Second Lieutenant Sam Piseth as the officer in the video and questioned him about the whole thing. He confessed that this was not the only time he had negotiated and accepted bribes.

Maj. Gen. Narin said that the provincial police are waiting for a decision from the General Commissariat of National Police on this case, and on two lesser cases.
