Kampong Chhnang Provincial Court yesterday charged in absentia a provincial police officer who allegedly beat his wife repeatedly and tortured her by pouring hot soup on her head and breasts.
Colonel Sok Vibol, deputy provincial police chief, identified the accused as Captain Som Dara, 42, and said he is charged with intentional acts of violence with aggravating circumstances and faces up to five years in jail if convicted.
He noted that the court also issued a warrant of arrest against Cap Dara, who did not turn up for the case.
Col Vibol said that according to a complaint filed on Tuesday, the accused’s wife Sros Sophy, 45, said that in recent years Cap Dara did not give money to support the family and beat her whenever she asked him about his salary.
Col Vibol said that at the end of August, the accused was dining with friends at a restaurant in the neighbourhood and the wife went there to see him after he was missing from home for a few days.
“He became angry with Ms Sophy for asking him for money and disturbing him while he was drinking with friends,” he said. “He then poured hot soup on her head and breasts, scalding her.”
“After pouring the soup on her, he took her home and beat her,” Col Vibol added.
He noted that at about 8.30pm on Monday, Cap Dara was drinking with some friends in his house when his wife again asked him for money which he promised to give to support the family.
Col Vibol said this time the accused took a glass and smashed it on her, causing injuries.
He noted that on Tuesday Ms Sophy filed a complaint with police about the accused’s cruelty.
