Prey Veng Provincial Court yesterday charged a man over the brutal murder of a woman who owed him $50 in Mesang district.
Colonel Vong Buntha, deputy police chief of the provincial general crimes department, identified the accused as Heang Kimhong, 39, a construction worker living in the district’s Svay Chroum commune.
He noted that Mr Kimhong was charged with intentional murder over the death of Tith Noeun, 55, a farmer, who he hacked with an axe several times and hit with a hammer.
Col Buntha said the accused was arrested on Saturday and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted. He is now in prison pending trial.
He said that at about 11pm on September 11, Mr Kimhong went to Ms Noeun’s house in the commune to ask her to repay the $50 because she had borrowed it many months ago. Col Buntha noted that the victim was a widow staying alone.
He said that when Ms Noeun told the accused that she did not have any money an argument took place with both parties cursing each other.
