Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a 34-year-old police officer for discharging his firearm into the air after threatening to kill his wife during an argument at their home.
Major Meng Touch, Por Senchey district deputy police chief, identified the accused as In Sarith, a municipal police officer with the criminal investigation department. Maj Touch said the accused was charged with death threats and the illegal use of a weapon.
He said the accused went home at about 11pm on Sunday after a night of drinking and began arguing with his wife Ly Eang, 43.
“He was drunk and angry at the wife for cursing him,” Maj Touch said. “He pulled out his pistol and threatened to kill his wife. He then fired 15 shots into the air in front of his home.”
He said that neighbours became disturbed and were afraid to intervene due to Mr Sarith’s weapon. Maj Touch said that Ms Eang called police after running out of the house.
He added that Mr Sarith was arrested by police shortly after midnight yesterday at his home. Police seized a pistol and a handful of ammunition.
The accused has been sent to prison pending trial, he noted.
