Police Kampong Speu province’s Samrong Tong district on Sunday arrested a farmer who allegedly hacked his girlfriend on the head with a hoe because she chastised his drinking habit.

Captain Nuth Sopheak, deputy district police chief, identified the suspect as Mov Chhunlim, 29, living in the district’s Samrong Tong commune, and the victim as Kim Sreyna, 18, a garment worker.

He noted that Mr Chhunlim was arrested at about 3pm on Sunday shortly after the attack in the commune.

He said that on the day of the attack, the suspect brought Ms Sreyna by motorbike to his house when his parents were away.

Cap Sopheak noted that Mr Chhunlim brought along some beers and rice wine to drink with her but she refused to have any.

He said that Ms Sreyna then advised the suspect not to drink alcohol, but he ignored her and drank the wine until he became drunk.

Cap Sopheak said the victim became angry with him and threatened to break up with him if he did not stop drinking.
