Heavy rains yesterday caused flooding in Battambang city, but local authorities said the situation is not serious.

The Water Resources Ministry reported yesterday that heavy rains in Battambang province over the past few days has caused flooding in some areas.

“The rains deposited a total of 52.8 millimetres of water which caused minor floods in Battambang city,” it said. “There is heavy rain in Thmar Koul, Banan, Ratanak Mondol and Moung Russey districts, but there is no flooding yet.”

Pang Heang, Battambang city police chief, yesterday said some areas are flooded but there was no need to evacuate people.

“Some low-lying houses in the city flood whenever it rains but there is no need to move villagers out,” he said.

On Monday, at least 23 houses were hit by floods from torrential rain in Pailin province’s Sala Krao district, prompting authorities to evacuate villagers. The floods have since receded.

The Water Resources Ministry last week announced that the country will experience rainfall until September 26 and provinces along the central lowlands are expected to be flooded.

According to a National Committee for Disaster Management report, 52 people have thus far died in recent floods across the Kingdom.
