Prime Minister Hun Sen has vowed to protect peace and Cambodian people’s lives as long as he remains the prime minister.

Mr Hun Sen wrote on his Facebook today saying that no one or group would be allowed to stage a coup or start a colour revolution in the country as long as he remains the prime minister.

Mr Hun Sen’s comment came as he recapped the 20th anniversary of an assassination attempt against him in Siem Reap province on September 24, 1998.

“I forgave those who attempted to kill me in Siem Reap although I had a clue in the investigation. You must know that as long as I am the prime minister, I will not let them kill me. At any cost, I must protect peace and lives of Cambodian people,” he said.

Mr Hun Sen recapped the incident which took place 20 years ago when he saw a B40 rocket flying towards his car but missed and then it struck a house on another side of the road, killing one and seriously injuring another.

He said the assassination attempt was made when the National Assembly’s session was held at the Royal residence in Siem Reap city under the chairmanship of then-King Norodom Sihanouk.

“If all the four B-40 rockets had exploded simultaneously or if there was no heavy rain to make the water affecting the rocket wire line, I would have died at that time,” Mr Hun Sen said.

“If I had died, then what could have happened in Siem Reap? Then, could the war end with the win-win policy like when Hun Sen is alive?” he asked.
