Phnom Penh Municipal police yesterday arrested a 51-year-old man who allegedly planned to kill his younger wife by pouring acid on her because he suspected she was having sex with other men to earn extra money.
Captain Keo Piseth, a municipal police officer, identified the suspect as Van Sing, a Vietnamese-Cambodian construction worker, and the wife as Srey Leak, 31, a karaoke hostess. Both live in Tuol Kork district’s Boeng Kak II commune.
He noted that the murder attempt took place at about 2am yesterday outside the Yes Karaoke Club in Phnom Penh’s Prampi Makara district.
Cap Piseth said that on Wednesday night, Mr Sing rode his motorbike and waited outside the club to check if his wife was accompanying a customer after she finished work. He noted that the suspect had a bottle of very strong acid with him.
Cap Piseth said that at about 2am, Ms Leak walked out of the club after work.
“When he saw his wife coming out, the suspect took the bottle to splash acid on her,” he said. “But the wife saw him and ran back into the karaoke and phoned her brother who alerted police.”
Cap Piseth noted that police rushed to the club and found the suspect sitting on a chair outside.
He added that police saw him holding the bottle, arrested him, and took him for questioning at the district police station.
A district police officer, who asked not to be named, said the suspect is still in custody pending further investigation.
“During his interrogation, the suspect denied that he attempted to kill his wife,” he said. “He said he bought the bottle of acid to refill his motorbike battery and went to the club to pick up his wife from work.”
The officer noted that police have accused Mr Sing of attempted murder and he will be sent to Phnom Penh Municipal Court today.
