Mesang district police in Prey Veng province are looking to arrest a man suspected of murdering of a 55-year-old woman on Tuesday night.
Colonel Nov Hach, Mesang district police chief, said yesterday that the victim suffered extensive trauma on her head and face from what looked like an axe and a hammer.
Col Hach identified the victim as Tith Noeun, a farmer.
He said that the murder took place at the victim’s home in Svay Chrum commune at about 11pm.
Neighbours became suspicious after failing to see the victim the next day and checked her house.
The victim’s body was discovered on her bed the next morning at about 5.30am by the neighbours, he said.
Col Hach said that witnesses saw the victim arguing with a 43-year-old construction worker over money at the victim’s house.
He said that according to neighbours, the victim owed the suspect $50, adding that the suspect, who also lived in the same village, was seen in the vicinity of the victim’s home prior to the murder.
Police suspect that the victim’s inability to pay back the money ultimately led to her death.
“According to our investigation, the suspect argued with the victim over money owed,” he said. “The suspect left his axe and hammer at the scene before he fled.”
Col Hach noted that the identity of the suspect could not be disclosed due to an ongoing investigation.
