A former municipal penal police officer Hang Vuthy, who was jailed 15 years for attempting to murder National Military Police Commander General Sao Sokha in 2003, died on Monday at a Phnom Penh hospital, his sister said.

According to Facebook post of Mr Vuthy’s younger sister Sun Sophorn, Mr Vuthy died of serious illness about 10:30am on Monday at Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital.

“My second older brother Hang Vuthy known as Yumreach died at Khmer Soviet Hospital about 10:30am on September 10,” Ms Sophorn said.

Mr Vuthy was charged in October 2003 with attempted murder together with disgraced former Phnom Penh police chief Heng Pov and his subordinates Hang Vutha, Oum Samkheng, Ly Rasy and Prum Sophearith.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court in 2009 sentenced Mr Vuthy to 15 years in jail over the attempted murder. It then granted him a retrial in April 2015 and upheld the conviction.

On August 12, the Appeal Court upheld conviction against Mr Vuthy who was jailed 15 years for attempting to murder Gen Sokha in 2003.

Ms Sophorn also appealed to Prime Minister Hun Sen to help intervene in releasing her younger brother Hang Vutha from Prey Sar prison so that he could join Mr Vuthy’s funeral.
