Away from the bright lights of Phnom Penh, the Cambodian national team, and Keisuke Honda, the annual Svay Rieng Cup is set to kick off with teams drawn from the eight districts of Svay Rieng province to fight for the title.
This year, the fourth edition of the trophy, will see 52 teams take part – an improvement on the 35 which took part in 2017.
The Svay Rieng Cup was inaugurated in 2013 by Di Vichchea, Vice President of the Union Youth Federation of Cambodia and President of Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia in Svay Rieng.
Rules restrict teams to selecting players from the age of 16 with an upper limit of 23, while squads are limited to 17 players. The competition format sees teams divided into 13 groups in a groups of four with teams finishing first and second proceeding to the Round of 32.
The tournament will kick-off with an opening ceremony on Sunday, September 16. The competition is expected to wrap up with the final set for January 7, 2019.
