The new senior officials of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) officially took office after their appointment by the King appointed on Thursday, SAept.6.
King Norodom Sihamoni issued the decree replacing RCAF Commander-in-Chief (CinC) Gen. Pol Saroeun with Gen. Vong Pisen, the former deputy CinC of the National Military Police.
The royal decree also appointed Gen. Ith Sarath as the RCAF’s Chief of Joint Staff and Lt. Gen. Hun Manet as the RCAF’s army commander.
The move was needed because former RCAF CinC Gen. Saroeun , Gen. Kun Kim, and former RCAF Deputy CinC Gen. Meas Sophea were given senior minister titles. Gen. Saroeun was appointed as senior minister in charge of peacekeeping.
September 7 was inauguration day for the three new military heads, with Defense Minister General Tea Banh presided over it.
Gen Banh said that the upper echelon replacements are aimed to increase efficiency and the positions are taken by qualified individuals. He sent out the warning that no attempts should be made to alter the line of succession through “pulling strings.”
