Two people died and several others were injured when a truck carrying lumber and 17 persons veered off a mountain road in Mondulkiri province’s Sen Monorom commune shortly after noon on August 4 (Tuesday). The injured have been sent to the Mondulkiri provincial referral hospital.
Due to the lack of witnesses, the police know little about the exact course of events – the driver and the two co-drivers fled the scene before the police arrived.
What is known is that the truck was on its way through Mondulkiri from the Memot district of Tbong Khmum province on a curvaceous mountain road along the O Ngeuy Valley.
Dorn Doeun, traffic section chief at Oraing district police, describes the accident as follows: “The accident occurred around 12:45am […] the inclined road curves there and we believed that the truck was driving so fast that the driver lost control [overshot the curve]. The truck fell into the valley and was left was lying about 30 meters from the road.”
The police are still searching the drivers of the truck and are checking the license plates to determine the vehicle’s owner.
