Takeo Provincial Court yesterday charged a 23-year-old woman for attempting to smuggle 13 kilograms of marijuana from Kirivong district to Vietnam.

Major Chhun Somethea, provincial military police deputy commander, identified the accused as Phin Puoy, a farmer from Chroy village.

Maj Somethea said Ms Puoy was charged for drug trafficking and has since been sent to prison pending trial.

Ms Puoy was arrested on Wednesday while attempting to transport the drugs, he said.

On her way to a border checkpoint, she suddenly turned around as soon as she saw border guards patrolling the checkpoint.

As she fled, border guards made note and pursued her into a nearby forest.

He noted that military police are now seeking to arrest Ms Puoy’s suppliers.
