THBONG KHMOM, Nov. 3, (Khmer Times) – A thief died at the hands of his victim yesterday, after his own rifle was turned on him during the robbery of a goldsmith near Stung Market, in Ponhea Krek district close to the Cambodian-Vietnamese border.
The man was shot dead around 5:00 pm yesterday, after his two unarmed accomplices went to the jeweler’s home and took cash and jewelry. The goldsmith followed the men, confronted them, whereupon a third robber armed with an AK47 rifle stepped in and shot the jeweler in the foot.
The wounded jeweler then fought with the armed robber, disarmed him, and shot him with the AK-47.
Thbong Khmom Provincial Police Chief Mao Pov stated, “The other two robbers then fled the scene, with $10.000 and some jewelry, on the goldsmith’s motorcycle to a rendezvous with their get-away car driver.”
The get-way driver was waiting in a black Lexus 330 around 30 km away in Dombae district, Kampong Cham province, where the motorcycle was ditched.
The police found the AK-47 and a hand grenade that the robbers had left behind at the scene. They are now collaborating with Kampong Cham and Kratie police to identify and arrest the three bandits on the run.
The injured jeweler was taken to the hospital for treatment. The police took the body of the unidentified robber to a local pagoda for cremation.
