PHNOM PENH, Nov.3, (Khmer Times) – The Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC) has demanded that Union President Rong Chhun withdraw his accusation that GMAC has donated US$1 billion to government institutions.

Mr. Chhun, president of the Cambodian Federation of Unions, alleged on October 28th that GMAC had handed over the cash. But in a statement issued today, GMAC slammed Mr Chhun’s comments as “false and potentially defamatory”.

GMAC went on to describe the allegations as “ludicrous”, while questioning his decision to speak out when discussions concerning the raising of the minimum wage are ongoing. In their statement, GMAC reminded Mr. Chhun that the wage negotiations could affect both the future of the garments industry and Cambodia itself.

“Making such statements at any time is completely irresponsible,” said GMAC in the statement. “GMAC has to question Mr.Chhun’s credibility as a leader of the country’s unions.”
