In an attempt to catch up with its rivals, Fossil has recently released its newest raft of Android-Wear OS powered smartwatches.
With the addition of heart rate sensors, NFC, and built-in GPS, the Fossil Q Venture HR and Fossil Q Explorist HR could well tear consumers away from their trusty Samsung Gear timepieces.
The addition of NFC is a particular boon allowing the watch to function as a mobile payment solution albeit it comes with a caveat – for now it only works with Google Pay.
The inclusion of sensors allow the watch to track walks and runs, hikes, bike rides and other activities and can even function without a smartphone thanks to the built-in GPS. Although you’ll probably want to pair up your smartphone to maximise this capability.
While the sensor upgrades are a welcome addition, the smatwatch is still utilising Qualcomm’s now two-year old smartwatch chip. As a result, battery life and performance leave a lot to be desired.
Qualcomm has promised a new, more powerful SoC later this year but for now, devices must make do with the underpowered Snapdragon Wear 2100. While the Fossil looks great, the old chip might just be a dealbreaker for consumers.
The Q Venture has a 40mm casing and 18mm interchangeable straps, while the larger Q Explorist HR has a 45mm casing and 22mm straps. The watches are priced between $255 and $275 depending on your selection and are available from Fossil’s website now.
