The ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) was established on 28 April 2018 as a collaborative platform for member cities to exchange best practices, urban solutions, and catalyse successful smart city projects to address the challenges of rapid urbanisation. Twenty six cities across ASEAN have joined the ASCN as the pioneer batch of participating cities. In Cambodia, we are particularly pleased to welcome the cities of Phnom Pehn, Siem Reap and Battambang into this pioneer group. These cities will lay the foundation for ASCN’s progress.
The ASCN ties in Singapore’s Chair-manship themes of “Resilience” and “Innovation” by encouraging member cities to leverage on technology to improve the lives and livelihood of our people. More than 90 million people in ASEAN are expected to urbanise by 2030, and “middleweight” cities of between 200,000 to 2 million residents are forecast to drive 40% of the region’s growth.
The ASCN’s first steps have been promising. At the inaugural ASCN meeting on 8 July 2018, five agreements were signed among ASCN cities, solution providers, and external partners in support of the Network’s objectives.
With the continued support of Cambodia and our other ASEAN partners, Singapore looks forward to the official launch of the ASCN by the ASEAN leaders in November 2018. For more updates on the ASCN, please join its Facebook group: ASEAN Smart Cities Network.
