Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday decided to jail two high school students pending their trial for their involvement in the rape of a fellow student in Phnom Penh last month. The accused were identified as 18-year-old Bou Samnang and 17-year-old Touch Longkhun, both Grade 11 students at the victim’s high school.

Nha Phat, Prek Pra commune deputy police chief, confirmed that the duo were sent to prison yesterday.

“From what I heard, the two were already jailed and our officers are waiting for further details,” Mr Phat said.

Sok Vanna, an officer with Chbar Ampov district police, said on Monday that two were arrested on Saturday after the victim attempted to commit suicide.

He said that on the evening of July 17 at about 7pm, Mr Samnang and Mr Longkhun persuaded the victim to attend a birthday party in Ta Ngao Krom village. During the party, the accused forced the victim to consume alcohol.

After she was intoxicated, the accused brought her to a guesthouse in the district and sexually assaulted her.

On the night of July 31, the accused once again persuaded the victim to attend a dinner with them and once again coerced her into consuming alcohol. When she became drunk, they brought her to another guesthouse and raped her again.

Police said last Wednesday the victim attempted to commit suicide at her home by consuming tablets of sleeping medication. She was discovered by her father and was sent to hospital for medical attention.

Following her recovery, she confessed to her father about the assault.

Her testimony prompted her father to file a complaint against the accused the next day.
