A 61-year-old-Vietnamese national who was serving a 30-year jail term for drug trafficking was found hanging from a bathroom beam in Mondulkiri provincial prison on Tuesday.
He is believed to have committed suicide over his long prison sentence.
Major Heang Bunthy, a provincial police officer, identified him as Chov Vandaing, who was arrested in 2012 for possessing nearly two kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in Phnom Penh.
He said that Phnom Penh Municipal Court in 2013 convicted him and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. The conviction was upheld in 2014 by the Appeal Court and by the Supreme Court in 2016.
Maj Bunthy added that after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction, Mr Vangdaing, who had been jailed at Prey Sar prison in Phnom Penh, was transferred to serve his sentence in Mondulkiri.
“According to a post mortem, he committed a suicide,” he said. “He was probably depressed over his long prison term and committed suicide by using a nylon rope to hang himself from a beam in the bathroom.”
