Phnom Penh police are looking for six members of a motorbike theft gang who chased and assaulted two men, one of whom later died, in Russey Keo district on Saturday.
Second Lieutenant Vong Theng, a police officer in the district’s Tuol Sangke II commune, identified the victims as Soeun Sann, 22, a cook, and Chhan Ny, 26, a waiter who died from his injuries.
Sec Lt Theng said that according to an investigation, the two had been at a nightclub in Russey Keo district and got into an argument over drinks with the six youths. The victims later left for home on a motorbike at about 2am on Saturday.
He said the six suspects, on three motorbikes, chased the victims for about 15 minutes and stopped them along Street 598 in Tuol Sangke II commune before assaulting them with planks.
“The suspects had an argument over drinks with the victims,” Sec Lt Theng said. “They then chased them and beat them causing serious head injuries.”
He said that when nearby police heard the commotion and went to investigate, the six suspects fled. Police then sent the victims to Preah Kossamak Hospital where Mr Ny died about two hours later.
Phnom Penh deputy police chief Colonel Tey Visal said police believe the six suspects are members of a Phnom Penh gang targeting motorcyclists at night, when they usually beat them up before stealing their machines.
