Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a 29-year-old tuk tuk driver with attempting to murder a police officer by repeatedly slashing him in Tuol Kork district’s Phsar Neak Meas market.
Court clerk Sok Leang identified the accused as Chhin Mach.
Mr Leang said that Mr Mach was charged with attempted murder and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted. He said the accused is now in jail pending trial.
Captain Hour Seng, a district police officer, said that on Sunday, Phsar Doeum Kor commune police received a call about an ongoing argument between the accused and a fruit vendor in the market. He said the victim, Second Lieutenant Khin Tith, and two other policemen were sent to investigate.
Cap Seng said that when police entered the stall of the fruit vendor to question Mr Mach, he took out two cleavers and slashed Sec Lt Tith several times causing serious injuries.
“After attacking the victim, the suspect managed to flee,” he said. “However he was later arrested in the same market.”
Cap Seng said that the victim suffered extensive injuries to his head, back and chest.
He said police seized two cleavers and Sec Lt Tith was sent to Calmette Hospital where he is currently recovering from the attack.
