BANTEAY MEANCHEY, September 27, (Khmer Times) – An eight month old girl drowned on Friday morning when she fell into a pond in front of her grandmother’s house.
The accident took place in Mongkol Borey district, Banteay Meanchey province, at around 4:30pm.
Provincial police said that it is believed the little girl’s grandmother was cooking rice and left her alone to play. It’s believed the toddler wandered off on her own and fell into the pond.
The incident follows a spate of child drowning in Cambodia earlier this year, which, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), is the largest cause of deaths in children aged 12 months to 4 years.
Unicef also stated that 80 per cent of these accidents occur within 20 metres of the victim’s house.
