Pailin Provincial Court yesterday charged an 18-year-old man with murder after he allegedly ran over his girlfriend and a police officer, killing them both, after spotting them riding a motorbike together.
Major Chan Sarath, a police officer with the provincial criminal investigation department, yesterday identified the accused as Nann Vin, a truck driver for an ice production facility.
Maj Sarath said that Mr Vin was in a relationship with the victim San Veasna, 18, whom he spotted riding on the back of Chuon Phanna’s motorbike on Sunday afternoon in Sala Krao district.
Maj Sarath said that Mr Phanna, a 26-year-old provincial border police officer, was giving Ms Veasna a ride to work.
However, when Mr Vin spotted them along a road in O’real village, he became enraged, thinking that his girlfriend was having an affair, he added.
Captain Kong Chanthan, a district police officer, said that Mr Vin, who was driving a truck, could not control his anger and ran down the two victims.
“The accused was jealous because she was riding with another man and he felt betrayed,” Cap Chanthan said. “He was infuriated and hit them with his truck, causing fatal injuries to the victims.”
“The damage done to the bike was so extensive that it was completely destroyed,” Cap Chanthan added. “The bike flew some distance and the truck continued on to smash into a house.”
Both victims died at the scene, he said.
Cap Chanthan said the accused then abandoned the truck and fled the scene, prompting a manhunt for him.
He said that provincial penal police tracked him down at his house the following morning and arrested him without incident.
Cap Chanthan added that during police questioning, the accused admitted to the crime, saying that he drove over the two victims because he was jealous.
The provincial court yesterday charged the accused with premeditated murder.
He has been jailed pending trial and faces a life sentence if convicted.
