The Interior Ministry is investigating a Facebook account that fabricated news that Vietnamese Association has called on its citizens to vote in the election on 29 July.

Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak said that the working group is working to find who has spread such fake news.

“This is fake news and it does not belong to that [Vietnamese] association here and we are looking for that account owner,” Gen Sopheak said.

“We are looking for where [Facebook account] is and if they are living in Cambodia, we will take legal action against them and if they are abroad, we notice them,” Gen Sopheak said.

Gen Sopheak said that such fake news was intended to hamper the election process.

“They intend to take it as a pretext not to recognize the election by saying that Vietnamese are voting. That group serves a trick of the dead party [CNRP] and traitor Sam Rainsy,” he said.

Gen Sopheak has also appealed to the public not to share fake news because it would disrupt the electoral process.
