The Cambodian team has won four medals at the recently concluded 2nd Asian Petanque Sport Championship Triples & Shooting for Women & Junior 2018 in Malaysia.
Until the final day of competition yesterday, the kingdoms squad garnered a silver and three bronze medals in the four-day competition in Kuala Lumpur.
Coach Sok Meng told reporters that boules legend Ke Leng snatched a bronze after falling to China in her semi-final. Khuon Leh won a silver medal after losing to Malaysia in the final. Other medals came from the youth section.
Cambodia’s delegation to Malaysia saw the kingdom represented by Ke Leng, Song Sokhakim, U Srey Ya, and Duong Dina, Khuon Leh, Koy Sopheaktra, Svay Khak and Khea Pheakdey.
The kingdom’s petanque stars are consistently in and around the podium at international competitions. Sok Chan Mean brought home a gold medal from the 47th World Championships in Madagascar, while veteran Ke Leng is herself a two-time World Championship winner.
At last years SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, the women’s petanque doubles team of Ke Leng and Ouk Sreymom defeated their Thai -duo Phantipha Wongchuvej and Pataratida Meepak 13-10 to claim gold – two of only four gold medals won by Cambodia at the regional showpiece.
Leng, speaking after the National Games, said that at age 53 she was not sure how much longer she could continue to play
Cambodia is set to host the Petanque World Championships next year.
