A 45-year-old woman has been arrested after she allegedly tried to exchange $500 in ghost money for casino chips.
The incident happened on Sunday at a casino in Kampot province near the border with Vietnam.
Kampong Trach district police officer Captain Khun Kimsean said Hong Somaly lost all her money playing games at the Chinese-owned casino.
Ms Somaly, from Chhouk district, then tried to exchange the counterfeit $500 for chips with casino staff to keep playing.
“She was caught by the casino security guards after the casino dealers inspected the money and found it to be fake US dollars,” Mr Kimsean said. “Security guards handed her over to local police for prosecution.”
After her arrest, police seized $1,000 in fake $100 banknotes from her. When questioned at the police station, Ms Somaly admitted her guilt.
She said she tried to pass the ghost money because she had lost at the games and had no money to keep playing.
Ms Somaly was accused by police of circulating counterfeit currency and banknotes and faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
She has been detained at the provincial police headquarters for further investigation and will be sent to the provincial court for questioning today.
