Prey Veng Provincial Court on Saturday charged a farmer with destroying flags and a banner of the League for Democracy Party.

The accused was identified in court documents as Pho Hoy, 33, living in Kanchreach district’s Kork Kong Lech commune.

He was arrested on Friday and is now in prison pending trial. He faces up to two years if convicted.

Major Seng Sophath, a provincial police officer, said that on Friday morning about 50 LDP members were campaigning door-to-door near Mr Hoy’s house in Svay Chek village. They were carrying party flags and banners.

“He was drunk and angry over the party president’s campaign statements which he found to be rude and immoral,” he said. “He grabbed an LDP banner and two flags from the campaigners and destroyed them on the spot.”

“He was soon arrested by policemen who were on duty to maintain order during the campaigning,” Maj Sophath added.

Maj Sophath noted that during interrogation the accused admitted to the crime and said he had been angry over the LDP president’s campaign statements.
