Workers Demand Union Leaders’ Reinstatement

PHNOM PENH, September 3, (Khmer Times) – Garment workers from Xin Fang (Cambodia) Garment Manufacturing Ltd are demanding the reinstatement of their trade union leaders.

The workers stressed that all 500 of them will not return to work if recently dismissed trade union president Chen Sovanna and union team leader Hang Dany are not recalled. 

Soun Samean, an official of the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers’ Democratic Union, said, “We come to court today to ask the prosecutor to call on Xin Fang to follow the previous agreement.” 

“If the court is unable to solve this problem, we will continue to protest.”

Presiding Judge Yet Molin asked the workers to return to work and confirmed that he will talk with Xin Fang representatives about Ms. Chen Sovanna and Ms.Hang Dany later. 

The workers began their strike by issuing demands including more money, a travel allowance and subsidized lunches.
