PHNOM PENH, September 2, (Khmer Times) – Two men were arrested at the Cambodia-Vietnam border attempting to smuggle a large amount of Vietnamese Dong into
Cambodia.

The men, Chinese nationals, were arrested separately after police discovered the currency hidden in a car. Inside of three suitcases and a carton they
discovered notes of VND 50,000, VND 100,000, and VND 200,000 denominations.

The seized cash totaled VND18.2 billion (US$860,000).

The driver of the car was unable to provide documentation for the money when asked. He told police he had been hired by another person  to carry the money into Cambodia.

The driver was also found to be in possession of four mobile phones and $1,030 and VND12.5 million ($590).

During interrogation the driver revealed that the intended recipient was waiting across the border to receive the money. The  impatient recipient, identified by the initials L.W. crossed the border into Vietnam to search for the money, and was arrested immediately.

Police are looking into the money’s origins and the purpose of its transport from Vietnam to Cambodia.
