Kampong Thom military police on Tuesday arrested a taxi driver and seized 56 geckos and nine wild civet cats he was transporting in his minivan in Baray district.

A district police officer, who only identified himself as Sam, said police stopped the minivan at noon and found the wildlife hidden inside.

“The driver was also ferrying some passengers and we allowed them to find alternative transport to continue on their trip,” he said. “The driver and the animals were sent to the district forestry administration for further action.”

He added that police believed the driver was ferrying the animals to Phnom Penh.

Kampong Thom forestry chief Mom Sophal said the driver was fined and set free. He did not disclose how much the fine was, but noted it was three times the value of each animal.

Mr Sophal said that the seized wildlife was released into a forest in the district’s Boeng Lovea commune.
