Siem Reap police on Tuesday arrested ten high school students believed to have been responsible for snatch thefts targeting foreign tourists in the province.
Provincial police officer Captain Heng Sophath said the students are from different high schools in the province.
“They belong to a group of thieves who prey on foreign tourists,” he said. “They ride around on motorbikes to steal handbags, phones, jewellery and other valuables from tourists in the province. They were arrested at different places in the province.”
He said that on July 8, the ten stole a handbag, containing passports and money, and two luxury phones from a foreign couple who were walking along a road in Siem Reap city.
Captain Sophath said the suspects were arrested when they brought the stolen items to sell to a phone shop in the city.
After their arrests, police seized three motorbikes, a laptop, eight phones, three handbags, and other items. Captain Sophath said the suspects are being detained for questioning and will be sent to the provincial court today.
