More than 500 garment workers in Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district on Friday protested and blocked a portion of Veng Sreng Boulevard to demand their annual bonus from 2010 to 2017.

The Meng Da Footwear Industrial workers claim they never got their bonuses and are now demanding they be paid because they heard there might be a change in ownership.

Employee Chan Tha said there are nearly 5,000 workers at the factory.

“They want to change to a new owner,” she said. “So, we want them to pay us our annual bonus that the company never paid for nearly eight years.”

Yim Saran, police chief of Por Senchey district, intervened during the protest.

“We suggested they not block the road and negotiate in private with the company,” he said.

A meeting is set for today.
