A man was arrested by police in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district yesterday after he injured a woman by pouring acid on her face and hands on Tuesday.
Stung Meanchey commune police chief Mao Savoeun identified the suspect as Khiev Visithsaya, 49, and the victim as Deoun Sunnara, 47.
Mr Savoeun declined to comment further, citing the risk of compromising the investigation.
According to a police report, the suspect put acid in a plastic bottle and threw the contents on the victim as she was driving her motorbike. She was then sent to Preah Kosomak hospital for emergency treatment.
The victim’s family filed the complaint to the police that led to the suspect’s arrest.
Mr Visithsaya’s attack apparently stemmed from unrequited love for his victim.
The suspect was arrested at the hospital when he went to visit the victim. Ms Sunnara, in the meantime, had been transferred to Calmette Hospital due to the seriousness of her injuries.
This is the third recorded acid attack this year. There were two cases in January, one in Phnom Penh and one Kampong Speu province. The Kampong Speu attacker has yet to be arrested.
