Police in Battambang province on Wednesday arrested a man over the grisly drowning murder of his wife in Sangke district.
Muong Lan, Sangke district deputy police chief, said the murder took place on Wednesday morning.
Mr Lan identified the suspect as Hoeus Hoeun, 30, a farmer accused of killing Ny Sreyneang, 33, in a jealous rage by strangling her and forcing her head beneath the water at a canal.
Mr Lan said the accused believed his wife was having an affair with another man in their village and had planned the murder.
He said he asked his wife to join him at the canal under the pretext of taking a bath before killing her.
“He caught the victim and squeezed her throat as she was taking a bath with him,” he said.
“He then pushed her head under the water until she drowned. After she died, he left her body in the water and fled,” he added.
Mr Lan said that the suspect was arrested by police after the victim’s body was discovered soon after the crime.
Ly Kong, an officer with Sangke district police, said the suspect confessed when questioned.
“He said that the reason why he killed the victim was because he was very angry at her for betraying him,” he said.
Mr Kong said that the suspect was preliminarily accused by police of premeditated murder.
The suspect is due in court today.
