MOSCOW (Xinhua) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have discussed over the telephone the preparations for the meeting between the presidents of the two countries in July.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, during their telephone conversation, initiated by the US side, the top diplomats of the two countries discussed the preparations of the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, as well as prospects for further building bilateral relations, including in the area of strategic stability, according to a ministry statement.
Last Thursday, the Kremlin and the White House announced that Mr Putin and Mr Trump would hold a full-fledged summit in Finland’s capital, Helsinki, on July 16. The two leaders are expected to discuss Russia-US relations, national security and top international issues.
Mr Lavrov and Mr Pompeo also touched upon topical issues on the global agenda, such as the situation around Syria and the Korean Peninsula issue, the statement said.
Mr Lavrov also met with a visiting US Congressional delegation. The two sides exchanged views on the current state and prospects of bilateral relations, including the possibilities of restoring contacts between the legislative bodies of the two countries, according to a separate statement.
