A new sports academy has been established in Siem Reap province to help promote and develop triathlon in the Kingdom.

Called Angkor TRI Academy, the new enterprise is a brainchild of Swiss national Jean-Marie Mozzon.

Angkor TRI Academy is described as a “unique and innovative service provider that combines triathlon and discovery in Asia.”

Mozzon, 52, who has a background in industrial engineering and sports, established the company four months ago.

“After a volunteering experience here a year ago, I decided to leave my comfortable life in Europe to develop triathlon in Cambodia,” he disclosed.

Mozzon is also a well-known triathlete and Ironman coach, who has competed in several world championships.  In addition to being a 20-time Ironman finisher, Mozzon also qualified for the world championship four times.

Triathlon, which usually involves swimming, running and cycling, is a new sport in Cambodia. In Siem Reap, only a very few people are aware of it,” he pointed out.

“My mission for the company is to develop a framework that is accessible for everyone, not only rich people, and the six company services have been designed to hit that goal,” Mozzon said.

Angkor TRI Academy offers duathlon club membership, triathlon club membership, personalised check-up and personalised training plan, among other services.

Mozzon said the business model of Angkor TRI Academy is built around the sport. He said they need to create events to raise awareness of its benefits.

Angkor TRI Academy has been working with the Cambodia Triathlon Federation (CTF) to organise some big events in Siem Reap.

Angkor TRI Academy’s first event will be the Angkor Triathlon Discovery, which is scheduled to be held in the province on Feb 6.

“Angkor Triathlon Discovery will be a multi-sport event opened to all. It will not be a race/competition but just an event for friends, families and people who want to accomplish their first swim-bike-run. We will swim for 20 minutes in a pool, then cycle 30km around Siem Reap, and finally run 5km until Angkor Wat temple for the finish,” he pointed out.

The event will be held in collaboration with the CTF, Singapore Helm Institute of Education and Sala Bai Hotel & Restaurant School.

Angkor TRI Academy is planning to hold more triathlon and related events in the future, not only in Siem Reap, but also in other locations in the Kingdom.

“We will organise similar events every month but with different formats (duathlon, triathlon, etc) and distances,” Mozzon mentioned.

In mid-February, the company will also organise a conference in Siem Reap, where it will talk about the sport, its history, the races, the rules, and introduce the Academy’s services and packages.
